Why Yoruba lag behind – leaders

Prominent Yoruba sons and daughters yesterday harped on the need for members of the ethnic nationality to revive the “Omoluabi” concept of honour and integrity as well as rally round in solidarity to ensure its progress and leading position, not only in Nigeria , but the entire world. And we on this end envy them as "so ahead", it's a mystery how some people are envy a position others have long been weary of and crave transitioning from.

Honestly, I don't know how the abandonment of the "omoluabi" principle has led to the backwardness of the Yoruba race. Indeed, is there any "omoluabi" again in the whole of Nigeria, or even the whole world? "Omoluabi" can be translated to mean "gentlemanism". Fela had long disowned the principle in his song "I no be gentleman at all o!". The Americans have long jettissioned the concept of gentlemanism by embracing the principle of "permanent interest" as against permanent friendship. Thus, if the whole developed world has relegated the principle of "omoluabi", and yet they experience development, the Yorubas must look elsewhere for the cause of their retrogression.

Moreover, I won't agree that the Yorubas are backward, at least within the context of Nigeria. However, compared with the momentum we started with in the early days of Nigeria, we have retrogressed. To my mind, the cause is a combination of all the same reasons that have bedevilled the developmental process of Nigeria as a whole. We cannot be an island, immune from the forces operating within and outside Nigeria.
