Default Bini monarch, chiefs curse kidnappers, robbers

BENIN—THE Bini monarch, Oba Erediauwa, yesterday, rained curses on kidnappers, armed robbers and people involved in other violent crime in the state, with his chiefs, led by the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom (Chief Priest of the Kingdom), Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, going round the streets of Benin, proclaiming and laying curses on evil doers in the society.

The Oba, who expressed worry over the persistent cases of kidnappings, assassinations and armed robberies, which the police in the state seemed incapable of checking, had last week ordered all the chief priests, witch doctors and herbalists to come out yesterday with a view to laying curses on the perpetrators of evil in the state.

However, the event which took place at the traditional Urhokpota Hall, Kings Square, was quite scaring, as thousands of traditional worshippers, dressed in red and armed with large slaughtered animals and charms, went round the major roads and streets in the city, laying curses on criminals in the society.

The event paralysed activities in the ancient city for over seven hours.

According to the Chief Priest of the Kingdom, Chief Isekhure, “as Edo people, we are traditionalists. We believe in God through our ancestors. In order to put a stop to all the cases of insecurity in our area, we had to put a curse by inviting the ancestors to destroy all those involved in these dastardly acts, so that at the end of the day, there will be calm in our society.

“We want peace but you know that those who want peace must be prepared for war. We have not done this kind of thing in the past 40 years. The Oba had instructed that in order for peace to reign here, we must mobilize the most effective tools within our capability and that is to put a curse on all those who are behind kidnappings in the state.”

“To all those bankers, who give information to kidnappers about how much a customer has in his account, they are also cursed.

“Even landlords, who knows that their tenants are armed robbers, kidnappers and they accommodate them, all of them will perish. It is unfortunate. We have to do this today (yesterday). We have no choice. Those who refuse to change will perish because the wages of sin is death,” he said.

Commenting also, the Iyase of Benin, Chief Igbe, lamented “our young men, who will be leaders of tomorrow are all dying due to the activities of these evil men. So the Oba is fed up of all these. This is the way we react to these kind of things in the past. So the Oba has gone back to ask the ancestors to help us clear these people in our society.

“This kind of action did not just start today. That is the way we dealt with such situations in the past
and we have gone back to it, so as to stop this wickedness. These people are punishing us. So when our father the Oba decided that we handle it this way, we were happy with it, ” he said.

I hope the Monarch and other elders will remember to curse all those that have stolen the future of the Nigerians unborn by squandering govt's money?
They should dedicate a day to curse all the people that have stolen unrepentantly and wish to steal from the government's coffer.

How I wish it's not all "shakara" that will produce no result. The rituals made at that time to fish out those that killed Dele Giwa has yet to produce the culprits up to now. Honestly, I wish this current one will be successful. And after it has been successful, the "technology" should be lent to other parts of the country to apply as well.

I wonder, however, why the treasury looters were not included in the curse ritual. It should have started from them, as the treasury looters form the genesis of almost all other crimes in Nigeria. Hope you know why.

Perhaps even the psychological side of the curse will deter some of the still faint-hearted among the miscreants, but unfortunately most of them believe in nothing and care nothing for anything except temporary enjoyment. Besides curses have such funny asides. The Curser has to be clean as a whistle. If not, it usually had the opposite effect. This is true of most cultures, but though I lived in Benin City for one year, I did not learn much. So it may be different there. I just pray it works because whether it works or it does not, there are balloon effects. If it works others will fear curses all over the nation. AND if it does not, it will remove the fear of all other cultural/traditional instruments used to scare those that are scared of such instruments.

Default Juju: Fear Grips Kidnappers, Robbers In Edo- Storm Palace For Forgiveness

BENIN—FEAR has gripped armed robbers and kidnappers in Edo State, following the curse placed on evil doers in the state, by the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, as Vanguard was reliably informed that hundreds of them have stormed the Palace of the Oba to plead for forgiveness, so as to escape the wrath of the gods.

Meanwhile, thousands of women from the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District of the state, thronged the traditional Urhokpota ground, weekend, to place curses on those involved in the endless cases of kidnappings, armed robberies and other violent crime in the state.

Vanguard learnt that the alleged criminals, who stormed the Palace to ask for forgiveness have been parading the Palace without getting any answer to their problem. They were, however, advised to change from their ways or die.

Vanguard learnt that they were still scared, whether the curse will affect them since they were yet to receive any assurance of forgiveness. Some bankers who leak information to kidnappers about their customers, have also fled the ancient city for the fear of death.

The women in the kingdom, led by Chief Isekhure, followed suit, weekend. The women dressed in red attires, had several ritual materials, which include dogs, fowls, rams which were slaughtered and their blood splashed on the ground, symbolizing death that was expected to visit those behind the robbery and kidnaping activities in the city.

President, Market Women Association of Nigeria, Madam Amalawa Edebiri, explained that the ceremony was to lay curse on the kidnappers and criminals in the state.

This is good news and may they be more scared. Abia should follow suit, and indeed anywhere where such a problem persists.
