Incredible but true! Durojaiye adeyemi Job-30 is a 100 level Higher National Diploma engineering student of the Polytethnic,Ibadan,Oyo State.By error of commission or omission his savings account domiciled at First Bank branch of his institution was recently credited to the tune of N9.3bn.In a rare display of honesty,he alerted the bank's authority of the development.Accordingly his action has won him a scholarship for his HND programme as was announced by the Rector of the Polytechnic-Prof.Olusegun Odunola. Also proud of his exemplary behaviour, the General Overseer of his church,Mountain of Fire and Miracle ,Dr.D.K Olukoya, hosted Durojaiye to a reception.

The last may not have been heard about the case of the N9.3 billion lodged in the FirstBank account of a student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Mr Durojaiye Job Adeyemi, with the subsequent report credited to the bank management that he should not be celebrated as he initially tried to steal the money but when he found out that he would not be successful, he eventually disclosed what he found in his account to the branch manager of the bank’s Polytechnic branch.

WHEN ANCOR, the volunteer arm of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) sought a clarification from the FirstBank’s management for the purpose of giving Mr Durojaye an official recognition, the bank demurred. In its memo dated October 6, 2010, addressed to the Chairman of Oyo ANCOR, the bank claimed that information available to it showed that Mr Job wanted to withdraw more than N20,000 that he eventually returned but for the bank’s quick rectification. The bank’s Chief Internal Auditor and the C.O. of the Internal Audit department, stated in their memo that “On Friday 13th August 2010, between 6.36 p.m. and 6.53 p.m., there was an incident where ATMs displayed N9.3 billion on all FirstBank ATM cards.”

IN the first place, where did the error occur originally? Why should 9.3 billion naira be credited to all FirstBank ATM cards at all if no such lodgement was made? Were there other false withdrawals made based on such erroneous posting? How many of such withdrawals were returned? How did FirstBank management know the intention of Mr Durojaye Job of wanting to withdraw more than N20,000.00 from his account? Why did he eventually return the money if truly he was a crook as FirstBank’s letter would have Nigerians believe?

THE management of FirstBank Plc made a fatal public relations error in its attempt to cover up its original carelessness. Its accusations or counter claims against Mr Durojaye are illogical, not to say foolish. But even beyond that such an attempt would tend to invalidate the aphorism that, honesty is the best policy now that it wants to paint Durojaye as a fraud. Its explanations and excuses are unacceptable because they underscore the views of some Nigerians who are already calling Mr Durojaye a fool. In an era of rebranding Nigeria, FirstBank’s defence is outrageous. The bank should have kept quiet if it could not join in endorsing and celebrating Mr Durojaye’s honesty.

Struggle continues, even if victory is not Certain.
