A Former Olympian, Rafiu Adio Oluwa, Died On Thursday At the Age of 80. He was born on January 1, 1929. A community leader and an astute sportsman, Oluwa represented Nigeria twice in the Olympics in 1952 and 1956. He has, however, been buried on Friday according to Islamic rites at the Vaults and Garden, Ikoyi.

The deceased was also a member of the first Nigerian Olympic team to Helsinki, Finland in 1952 where he participated in the 200 metres and 4x100 metres, and second Olympic team to Melbourne, Australia in 1956 where he participated in long jump and 4x100 metres.

From 1957 to 1961, he was a member of the London Athletics Club where he participated in sprints, high and long jumps.

Oluwa was a winner of the 440 yards (now metres) at the Grier Cup competition, which was the highest athletics competition for secondary schools in Nigeria then.

In the corporate world, he worked with the British Petroleum, now African Petroleum before joining the Nigerian Carton and Packaging Manufacturing Company where he later became a director after 29 years of service.

He is survived by Mrs. Abimbola Adeshoye, Mrs. Olasunbo Solola, Biodun Oluwa, Gboyega Oluwa, many children and grandchildren.
