He was born on October 27, 1910, at Oru, Ijebu to the late Pa Isaac Taiwo and late Madam Lydia Taiwo. He belongs to the Olumota ruling house of the Oba Oloru of Oru, Ijebu. He attended many schools and bagged several certificates and awards, including M.Sc., Ph.D., Lit (London) and Hon. LL.D. (Cape Coast). He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple (Inn of Court), London on February 4, 1964, and enrolled as Barrister-at-Law and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on July 3, 1964.
He is Fellow of Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration; Fellow, Nigerian Academy of Education; and Lord LUPEN (Luminaries of Professional Educators of Nigeria), among several others.
He was the Baba Ijo (Father of the congregation) of St. Luke‘s Church, Oru, Ijebu since 1973; and he was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin on September 1, 1990.
Given the privilege of his education and, perhaps, as a friend of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, how come Pa Taiwo did not venture into politics?
“I was too busy to play politics,” he submitted. Of course, the life of the first Professor of Education in the University of Lagos, an opportunity for which he left his portfolio as permanent secretary in the education ministry of the Western Region, in 1966, has been dominated with exploits in the education sector. He was also UNILAG‘s first and only provost.
A renowned educationist, author, Barrrister-at-Law and Notary Public, first republic Permanent Secretary and many more.
The attendance at the thanksgiving service which read like who-is-who included the former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; Chairman of First City Monumental Bank, Otunba Subomi Balogun; industrialist, Chief Chris Ogunbanjo; Afenifere chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo; Chairman, Punch Nigeria Limited, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola; advertising guru, Biodun Shobanjo and Alaye of Odogbolu, Oba Adedeji Onagoruwa.
Also in attendance were members of Boys Scouts; old boys of the celebrant’s alma mater, St. Andrews College, Oyo, academics and old students of University of Lagos, where Taiwo was the pioneer and only provost of the College of Education. They were there to pay homage to a man who had contributed immensely to the Nigerian education sector.
Diocesan Bishop of All Saints’ Church, Prof. Adebayo Akinde, in his sermon eulogised the educationist for his sense of giving and challenged priviledged Nigerians to emulate the selfless lifestyle of the Centenarian.
According to Akinde, Pa Taiwo gave what he had to the growth of the education sector in Nigeria, to the growth and achivements of his students and also to the church.
