An American student has stabbed his best friend to death because he suspected he was sleeping with his girlfriend.
A 25-year-old George Washington University student, Rahul Gupta, who murdered his best friend, Mark Waugh, for sleeping with his girlfriend, Taylor Gould, told a court that she should be blamed for the murder because she allowed Waugh to sleep with her.
The court in Maryland, heard that Gupta had suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him with his best friend, a law student at the same university and on her birthday, while the three of them went back to his apartment after celebrating, the two men got into a fight and Gupta took out a kitchen knife with which he stabbed Waugh to death.
When the police arrived, Gupta confessed to the crime and he was found covered in blood.
"My girlfriend and my friend were cheating."
But in court, Gupta changed his story and said that his girlfriend killed the victim, but he wanted to cover for her.
Gould, who was also bloody, said that she was too drunk and could not remember what happened that night.
However, a jail phone call recorded between Gupta and his father helped convict him of murder.
He had said:
"Mark and I had a fight, he tried to get a knife, and then I got a knife."
Gupta was sentenced to life in prison.
