The national U-20 women's team, Falconets have left Nigeria for Germany to participate in this year’s FIFA female category of the Women World Cup finals tournament.
The 21-man squad led by the Head coach, Egan Adat flew out aboard Lufthansa airline from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos yesterday, July 7.
With this development, Falconets are the immediate beneficiaries of last Monday’s review of the Federal Government’s earlier decision to withdraw Nigerian National teams from international football competitions.
They were stopped at quarter-final stage at the last edition of the competition staged in Chile in November 2008.
They were lucky to have escaped the ban from participating in the football tournament in Germany following President Goodluck Jonathan's pronouncement on international football ban. But luck shone on them when the Jonathan led Federal government uplifted the ban on the country's participation in the international tournaments following Super Eagle's poor outing in the on-going World Cup mundial in South Africa.
The President's gracious review has let them into the championship again and the team flew out aboard Lufthansa airline flight from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday evening.
Egan Adat led out the final 21-man squad comprising of goalkeepers Marbel Egwuenu, Rabi Ihiabe and Alaba Jonathan, as well as Joy Jegede, Ngozi Ebere, Gloria Ofoegbu, Esther Michael, Marvis Ohale, Amarachi Okoronkwo, Ugochi Oparanozie, Rebecca Kalu, Glory Iroka, Uchechi Sunday, Esther Sunday, Helen Ukaonu, Charity Adule, Martina Ohadugha, Cecilia Nku, Ebere Orji, Blessing Edoho and Soo Adekwagh.
Nigeria will play in Group C of the tournament alongside England, Mexico and Japan. The Falconets first tackle England in Augsburg Wednesday next week, before taking on Japan in the same city on July 17. They will then play Mexico in Bochum on July 21.
Nigeria reached the quarter finals of the last edition of the competition in Chile in 2008 before losing to France in extra time.
