Nigerian hurdler Samuel Okon, who finished sixth in the Commonwealth Games 110m hurdles final, has failed a drugs test having tested positive for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine, as revealed by the Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell on Tuesday October 12.
Okon is the second Nigerian athlete to test positive for the stimulant in Delhi, with women's 100m winner Osayemi Oludamola revealed to have failed a test on Monday October 11 pending the analysis of her B sample.
Fennell said: "We have had approximately 1,200 tests up to last night and I again regret to inform that we have had a second anti-doping violation. This is also with a Nigerian athlete, Okon, Samuel, in the 110m hurdles and for the same substance, methylhexaneamine."
"The athlete has been notified and there will be a provisional hearing later today."
Fennell added: 'We are concerned with the number of incidents that are coming up with the same substance.
"At this stage I cannot speak very definitively as to where it's coming from but it appears that it may be coming from the use of supplements.
"The supplements industry is by and large an unregulated industry worldwide and it is an industry that is a cause of great concern, not only for the fight against doping but also the protection of athletes."
Methylhexaneamine, a stimulant commonly used in nasal decongestants, was added to the banned list of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) for this year.
Asked when the results for Okon's B sample test would be known, Fennell said: "We have been informed that the athlete is waiving the right to the B sample test but this has yet to be confirmed. We will confirm this at his hearing this afternoon."
Media reports in Nigeria said Oludamola blamed a toothache remedy for the traces of the banned substance being found in her sample, but Fennell suggested nutritional supplements might be to blame.
Meanwhile, the result of Oludamola's B sample is expected to be known on Wednesday October 13, when she could be stripped of the gold medal she won. Australian Sally Pearson was disqualified for a false start in the same heat.
