The 17th national sports festival which kick off on the 28th of June 2011, is being hosted at the University Of Port Harcourt.
The authorities of the University of Port Harcourt say they will extend their students’ vacation to enable participants in the 17th National Sports Festival to use its facilities.
The festival is scheduled for June 27 to July 11.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ajienka said on Wednesday in Port Harcourt that the management decided to extend students vacation for that reason.
Ajienka said the university would serve as the Games Village and host some games.
“Serious renovation work is taking place in our hostels at Delta Park.
“We have good sports facilities in this university. Our swimming pool is of Olympic standard, our Indoor Sports Hall is standard.
“Our gymnasium, which was recently equipped just before the last NUGA Games in Benin, is also standard,” he said.
The vice-chancellor said the university had other facilities such as a referral medical centre and the teaching hospital to be used for the festival.
“We are happy to be chosen to be part of the Games and everything is put at the disposal of the organisers to ensure a successful festival,” he said.
Ajienka also commended the Rivers State Government for a good job in preparing for the festival and renovating the university hostels to serve as the Games Village.
