The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that unregistered SIM cards will not be blocked until collation and level of compliance figures has been ascertained.

NCC’s spokesman, Reuben Mouka, stated on Wednesday that the commission wouldn’t just block out subscribers’ SIM cards like that without first knowing the level of compliance across the country.

“It is after the collation and establishment of level of compliance that we can block those who deliberately failed to register,” he said.

The NCC had, earlier in the year, threatened that any subscriber, who failed to register his /her SIM card after September 28, would have it blocked.

In response to the number of SIMs that has been registered, Reuben said that figures could not be placed as collation was still in progress.

According to a report, there are 1997 NCC registration centres across Nigeria, with Zamfara State having the least with 15 centres, followed by Benue State with 18 and Bauchi with 19.

The SIM registration exercise was flagged-off by the NCC in March, with a six months ultimatum, which ends today. Many have called for an extension of the September 28th deadline, as they lament that the six months is too short considering the country's population.
