How do I access a Mobile Internet Bundle plan?
You need an internet-enabled phone and an MTN SIM card. Your MTN SIM card is pre-configured with MTN’s data settings and is ready to use for Internet browsing. However, if you own an older SIM that is not configured for browsing, text "SETTINGS " to 3888 and save the settings received immediately.
MTN strongly recommends that you subscribe to a data plan before browsing on your phone in order to get the best value and avoid paying the out-of-bundle rate unnecessarily.
What’s the difference between downloading and uploading?
Downloading is what happens when you view, listen to or read things online. For example when you watch a video, open an attachment, visit a website or buy an application, you are downloading. Uploading is what happens when you add something to the internet from your phone. For example if you update your Facebook status, share a picture, add a video online or send an email you are uploading. Your total data usage is the sum of uploading and downloading.
How do I keep track of how much data I’m using?
To check your data consumption, text 2 to 131 to see how much of your data you have used as well as your bundle expiry date and time.
How do I know when my bundle plan expires?
You will get an sms notification once your bundle plan expires. You may wish to renew your subscription by texting the code of your preferred plan to 131 each time it expires; otherwise you will be charged the out-of-bundle rate.
How much am I charged per KB without a bundle plan?
If you are not subscribed to a bundle plan, you will be charged an Out-of-Bundle rate of 5k/kb. If you are subscribed to a bundle plan, you will be charged in-bundle which is always cheaper than browsing out-of-bundle.
Can I convert my un-used data to airtime?
No, you will lose any un-used data at expiry.
How do I know when I exceed my allocated data volume?
You will be automatically stopped from browsing and given an option to purchase another bundle plan or continue browsing at the out of bundle rate of 5k/Kb.
Can I switch to a new bundle plan while I’m still subscribed to a plan?
No, you can only switch when your bundle plan has expired or when you have exhausted your data bundle. You may then re-subscribe to the same bundle plan or any other bundle plan of your choice.
Can I unsubscribe from my bundle plan?
No. your bundle plan will expire automatically when the duration of your plan has expired or you have reached the data limit of your plan.
If I’m out of credit but my bundle plan is still active and within my limit, can I continue to browse on my mobile?
Yes you can continue to browse until either your bundle plan expires or you reach your bundle plan limit.
What if I use my phone as a modem to a PC?
You will be connected but your data allowance will get consumed much faster. We recommend Fastlink bundles if you want to connect your PC.
How much MB allowance will I use when I check my email?
Checking your webmail, such as Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, will use about 0.1MB. This includes logging in, reading, composing and sending an email. Emails with attachments will increase this figure.
How much data will I use when I view video?
If you're downloading a video that's meant for a mobile screen, 1MB per minute is a good rule of thumb. Using this rule, a 4 minute video clip would use around 4MB of your daily or monthly allowance. If the video was meant for a TV or PC screen, or it's over 5 minutes long, we wouldn't recommend downloading it to your phone, as it may struggle to play it back and you may not have enough storage space on your phone. A better solution for your mobile is to stream the video.
The richer the content the more data it will use. So a high quality video will use a lot more data than a photo, which in turn will use more data than a simple text email or a status update.
How much MB allowance will I use when I download applications?
You can download a huge variety of applications to your phone such as eBay, MySpace, Reuters news and much more.
Testing a few applications, we found that most are less than 0.2MB, but this can vary significantly depending on the application you download.
How much MB allowance will I use when I download music tracks?
If you download music from the internet to your phone the data relating to the download will come out of your daily or monthly allowance, just like your web browsing.
The amount of data used will depend on the length of the music track and the quality it was produced at, typically we found these tracks to be about 3 megabytes (MB) each.
How much MB allowance will I use when I download ringtones?
If you download ringtones from the internet to your phone, perhaps from a site like Jamster (TM), then the data relating to the download will come out of your daily or monthly allowance, just like your browsing.
The amount of data used will depend on the length of the ringtone and the quality it was produced at. Realtones, which sound just like the song itself, use the most data - and still only use about 0.15MB each. Polyphonics use even less!
How much MB allowance will I use when I download games?
You can download loads of different games to your phone such as Tetris, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Sims and much more. Testing a few different games, we found that most are less than 0.25MB in data size.
