The S6 series of phones are working well for Gionee and that is perhaps the reason they are continuing to focus on it. The latest in the series is the Gionee S6 Pro -this is the company's new flagship smartphone for the Diwali season.
Being the flagship model, the Gionee S6 Pro comes with powerful specifications. You get a Mediatek Helio P10 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and a 3,130mAh battery . Looking at the price, you'll realize that you can easily get phones with a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor for lesser. That being said, the performance from the S6 Pro for day-to-day tasks or gaming does not feel lacking in any way . We were able to play 4k videos as well as intensive games on the device without any hitch. You get 64GB internal storage which is usually enough for most users. However, Gionee has also offered the option of storage expansion for those who might need more space. In terms of battery life, we were able to get over a day of use with the S6 Pro on a regular basis -in our opinion, this should be good enough for most users.
You get a 5.5-inch full HD display that impresses with vibrant colour, good brightness levels and wide viewing angles. Like the Gionee S6s, this one too has slim bezels around the display which adds to the phone's overall looks. One big design change is the inclusion of a front home button that has integrated fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor worked great and was able to recognize 9 out of 10 attempts while scanning. This home button also works as a touchpad -you can bring up a window called Edge bar by sliding your finger left or right on the home button. This Edge bar can be configured with choice of apps for quick access and proved to be handy for daily use.
We've seen that Gionee phones always have good design and the S6 Pro does not disappoint. The gold unit we received has blue lines running across the edge of the phone for a touch of style. The curved edges with unibody metal design and metal buttons makes the phone feel worthy of its asking price.
It has a 13MP rear camera which impresses with fast autofocus and shutter speed. Moreover, the images had sharp details, rich colour and minimal noise -definitely par for the course. The front 8MP wide angle camera also takes good selfies but they are not at par with what we saw on the selfie focussed Gionee S6s.
Overall, the S6 Pro is a capable performer that stands its ground amongst competition in the sub `25,000 price bracket. The issue is that the increasing competition has lead to a lot more options being available in this price segment. The very capable LeEco LeMax 2 is now less than `20,000 and offers a quad HD display with Snapdragon 820 processor. Moreover, Gionee's own S6s for a cheaper price offers similar performance and design even though it doesn't share the same specifications on paper.
