Default Over 17,000 die in Nigerian road crashes

More than 17,000 people died in about 31,000 road accidents across Nigeria between 2007 and 2009, according to official statistics released on Sunday by the federal government road safety agency.

More than 73,000 were injured in these accidents during the period under review, said the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), which added that it hopes to achieve a 50 percent reduction in road traffic fatality over last year's figure of 5,690.

Undisciplined, reckless driving, illiteracy, bad road networks and poor vehicle maintenance are often cited as reasons for road crashes and fatalities in Nigeria,

    Mine comments.
Though illiteracy, recklessness etc are mentioned,I maintain that the Highest no of deaths are as a result of Bad roads.

Struggle continues, even if victory is not Certain.

Yes bad roads take the first slot, but indiscipline and unlicensed drivers contribute greatly. However that is not the point. The figures given here are not accurate. We challenged them before with proof of over 16 ghastly accidents with43 fatalities, to which they admitted not knowing, So the figures must be higher. Again the FRSC. the Police as well as Traffic Wardens in some cities, cause ghastly accidents by putting up check points at odd places or by misdirecting traffic. The causes are many.

I agreed with you Sir ,that the figures are understated.
