In 2010, shortly after an old railway line had been re-opened connecting the Indian Ocean port city of Beira to the interior of Mozambique, a train ran into a hippopotamus, killing it.

Soon after, another train on a different line ran into a herd of cattle, killing 35 head of them.

Residents of the central Mozambican province of Sofala were reported to have claimed that the crashes were caused by angry ancestral spirits
