Academic activities have resumed in the three tertiary institutions in Katsina State following the suspension of strike recently embarked upon by their staff.

Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Muktar El-Kassim, told journalists that the union suspended the strike following intervention by the state government.

“We met with the governor and he approved two of our demands, that is, the immediate payment of salaries to newly recruited staff, and the release of union dues; just as he constituted a committee to immediately look into other demands,” he said.

Reacting to the suspension, the special adviser on Higher Education, Dr Garba Shehu Matazu, said the state government had approved the release of N37.6 million for the payment of salaries to newly recruited staff, as well as the payment of the remaining 50 per cent union dues.

Staff unions of the three institutions, namely, Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Isa Kaita College of Education and Yusuf BalaUsman College of Legal Studies, had embarked on an indefinite strike.

The union demanded for the implementation of 2012 yearly increments and payment of the remaining 50 per cent of the union dues for the month of September, October and November, 2011, as well as the complete dues for December, 2011.
