Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, Dr. Ahmed Modibbo, on Thursday, challenged Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and other faith-based organisations to join hands with government to enhance the quality of education in the country. Modibbo spoke when he received members of the women wing of CAN in his office, on Thursday. He said it had become necessary for faith-based organisations and government to partner in the total transformation of the education sector.

He said: "We must bring everybody interested in partnering with government in the development of the educational sector together. I strongly believed that without religious inclination, we will not yield the desired result. "I have been looking for an opportunity to interface with major faith-based organisations, because education as you all know is the responsibility of all. There is no way government alone can take responsibility for education."


Modibbo said there were a lot of challenges militating against education. He said the Education Research Development Council recently clarified its position on a misconception that Islam and Christianity had been marginalised in the new curriculum. He said: "The new curriculum had taken into considerations the need for children to undertake faith-based lessons to enable them have a better understanding of basic education."
