Default UNILORIN Graduates 36 First Class Students

The University of Ilorin has graduated 5, 383 persons in various disciplines in the 2011/2012 academic session, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, said in Ilorin on Monday.

The number includes 36 persons, who obtained first class degrees, Oloyede told the |News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the Senate of the university had approved the results at its 227th sitting.

The vice-chancellor said the Senate approved 4, 686 first degrees and 679 post- graduate degrees as well as 18 diplomas from the Institute of Education.

He said a breakdown of the result showed that 871 students passed in second class upper division, 2, 297 had second class lower division, 1, 120 passed in third class, while 287 had ordinary pass degrees.

Oloyede said the Faculty of Science recorded 11 first class graduates, while Faculty of Agriculture and Business and Social Sciences produced seven first class graduates each.

Oloyede denied that he planned to hold a ‘special convocation’ to enable him to preside over the graduation ceremony before the end of his tenure.

He said: “as a matter of tradition, the university does not celebrate individuals but collective achievements.

“Whoever is the new vice-chancellor, no matter how new he is on the seat, would statutorily preside over the convocation ceremonies,” Oloyede said.

He urged members of the university community to cooperate with the Vice- Chancellor-designate, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali, and other principal officers.

He urged staff and students to always have a positive disposition toward the institution so that it would continue to excel among other institutions. (NAN)

Uhhumm... This is what we are talking about. Citadels of Learning should learn to give students who deserve first class the honour due them. Its unlike some useless clueless universities in the North including the erstwhile prestigious ******* Univesity where students are denied their actual worths based on some sentimental reasons.
Without apologies, I would even like to state that their act of denial is even very foolish. This is because the North as it is can still be said to be educationally bankrupt (is that even realistic? They have never been educationally bouyant before), so what is the basis of denying students the product of their sweat? When even Educational Champions in the West don't?
Moreover, I wish to congratulate the award recipients. They are lucky to be in such reasonable institution.
Besides that, I hope they are exceptions to the research based classification which states that First Class Students are naturally theorists.
In summary, to those foolish, student worth degrading Universities I say "give Caesar what belongs to Caesar", to their objective counterparts I say "well done", and to the lucky students I say "Handshakes are in order".
    Gracias.
