The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, on Monday said the recently launched four-year strategic plan on education was to improve the standard of education in Nigeria.
Rufai made the statement at the matriculation of 270 pioneer students of the Federal University, Kashere in Gombe State.
She said the plan, which was prepared by the ministry, would address the issue of provision of education to every child in the country.
According to her, the Federal Government is committed to revamping education in the country as no meaningful development will be achieved without educating the citizenry.
The minister commended Kashere Community and the Gombe State Government for their moral support and assistance which ensured the smooth take off of the university.
According to her, in order to meet the immediate needs of the community, a faculty of agriculture will commence in the next academic session.
She urged the students to be serious in their studies, adding, ``do not involve yourselves in anti-social vices that will tarnish the image of the institution yourself and yourfamily,” she said.
The Gombe State Deputy Governor, Mr Thananda Rubainu, said the government remained committed to supporting the Federal Government toward the successful take off of the university.
Rubainu said the state had started enjoying the presence of the university because it created jobs for youths with businesses and other investment opportunities opening up.
He told the authorities of the university to maintain excellent academic standards and to remain focused in making the university to become a world-class institution.
“You should at all times be keenly watchful and alert in monitoring students’ movements and conducts to ensure that they become responsible citizens of the country,” he said.
He said Gombe State Government appreciated President Jonathan for establishing a federal university in the state.
He also commended the President for the establishment and funding of the university, saying that the institution had been positioned to make meaningful contributions to nation building.
“I, therefore, call on people of Gombe State to fully support the institution, the Deputy Governor said.
