The Chairman of the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, Monsignor Buchi Aninye, Thursday, said the state government had spent about N400 million on bursary for 18 ,000 students of the state origin in tertiary institutions across the country in the Student Special Assistance Scheme, SSAS for the 2009 /2010 academic session. Aninye who disclosed this while speaking to newsmen, said the list of other 2 ,000 benefitting students was still being processed and commended the state government for assisting students of the state origin in their academic pursuits. He said the board has seven programmes through which students are encouraged. He said the SSAS programme was meant for students with CGPA of 2. 20 and above and thanked the state Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, for sustaining the programme. According to him, the 18 ,000 students so far paid were drawn from 91 tertiary institutions in Nigeria, adding that the e-solution system had afforded the board the opportunity of paying directly into the accounts of the benefitting students. Speaking further, he disclosed that the board had commenced registration of students of the state origin in tertiary institutions for the 2010 /2011 for the SSAS programme. He held that the board was committed to the wellbeing of students of the state origin and urged the students to take advantage of the state government’ s magnanimity to acquire good education. “I advised students of the state origin to obtain the forms on_line by purchasing a scratch card of N300 from either Bank PHB, Zenith Bank, Oceanic Bank, Equitorial Trust Bank,” he said.
